He joined politics over a decade ago and has been active since then. At the age of 35, Mike was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Makadara constituency. He started out with eight matatus on the Kibra route. His business flourished and he added more matatus on the Umoja and Dandora route within three years. A year later inhe added minibuses to his fleet of vehicles which plied the Buru Buru route. From the matatu proceeds, he ventured into tours and travel business where he bought a double decker for ferrying tourists and two buses.
His dominance in the matatu industry saw him elected to head Eastlands Matatu Association as the chairperson. He championed for the rights of the youths being harassed unnecessarily and helped to put behind bars rough officers who extorted bribes from motorists. Sonko shot into limelight in when he won a court battle in a case which restricted Eastlands matatus from entering the Central Business District CBD.
The government issued a directive where the matatus were allowed to stop at the Muthurwa Market much to the relief of the operators. He is married to Primrose Mbuvi and is a proud father to his three lovely daughters — Saumu, Salma and Sandra. All his daughters are from different mothers. His track record is remarkable and is evident in the way he improved the residents living conditions.

He became the First Senator of Nairobi after garneringvotes, beating his closest competitor, Margaret Wanjiru of the Orange Democratic Movementwho had garneredvotes, in the Nairobi senatorial election of During his time in the Senate, he formed the Sonko Rescue Team, [ 10 ] an officially registered Non-Governmental Organization [ 11 ] that provided government-like services to residents of Nairobi slums.
The then-governor of Nairobi County, Dr. Evans Kidero opposed the activities of the group, citing conflicts of interest with the county government's operations. The Senator acquiesced and donated the vehicles to the county government after several weeks of tense public exchanges. As early as JanuaryMike Sonko had announced his intentions to run for Governor of Nairobi County in the Kenyan general election.
On 17 Decemberafter undergoing an impeachment procedure by the Nairobi County Assembly, Sonko was impeached by the Nairobi Senate and removed from office.

After the Westgate shopping mall attack in SeptemberSonko claimed that he had warned the security services of a possible attack three months prior to the incident. On 6 Decemberthe Director of Public Prosecutions in Kenya issued an arrest warrant against Mike Sonko for various corruption charges during his tenure as a Governor of Nairobi County.
Due to involvement in corruption, the U. Sonko is rumoured to have broken out of prison in and recently, officials have called for him to complete his jail term. A myriad of court cases was suddenly in his daily retinue and to add salt to injury, the Nairobi County Assembly impeached him on December 3, and by December 18,the Senate confirmed his impeachment.
His flailing attempts to reach the President fell flat on each try as did his overtures to reach the leader of the opposition, Raila Odinga who had mended fences with the President. In his moments of desperation, he even cavorted with the Deputy President who had fallen out with the President and in his usual style rankled feathers when he alleged he had participated in dirty tricks against the opposition with the full participation and knowledge of the state.
In December Sonko got arrested dramatically midway to Mombasa while on the SGR train, he sank his teeth through the hand of the cop who held him and he got airlifted back to Nairobi in a police chopper and he was immediately arraigned back in Nairobi on more charges. One charge was peculiar though, he was wanted for not finishing his jail term at Shimo La Tewa Prison way back in time!
Sonko was kept very busy, fighting his way through the courts, and in his spare time, he would drop "humble" pictures on social media showing him working with his workers on a building at one of his homes. The General Election of is just around the corner and Sonko still has his mojo! He is reinventing himself and this time, it is through the Wiper Democratic Party.

Of course, he still has his flashes of genius and he is a man of means and great mobilisation skills. Wiper supremo, Kalonzo Musyoka does not mind having him in his corner. He knows Nairobi has been zoned off and naturally set his sights on trophy number two, Mombasa County. He claims nativity to the coastal city as would any local from that county, he was born and brought up in Mombasa.
Long gone now are the days he scratched out a living in the coastal town trying to sell property and ending up in prison on fraud charges. This is a brand new beginning holding a lot of hope, more hope for him than for the people he plans to lead. On 14th Julythe High Court in Mombasa quashed an earlier decision by the electoral commission to disqualify Sonko from vying for the Mombasa Governor seat on grounds that he had been impeached from office.
